SharedfoldersIfthevirtualmachinehassharedfoldersenabled,youcanusethisfeaturetomovefiles betweenthehostandguestoperatingsystems.Thevirtualmachinemustbepreconfiguredwithshared foldersenabled,andwiththepathspecifiedtothedesignatedsharedfolderonthehost.Asasecurity precaution,sharedfoldersaredisabledbydefaultinVMwarePlayer.Whenyouopenavirtualmachine withsharedfoldersinVMwarePlayer,anotificationmessagestatesthatsharedfoldershavebeen disabled,andtellsyouhowtoreenablethem.

Installing VMware Player


ThissectiondescribeshowtoinstallVMwarePlayeronWindowsandLinux.IfyoudonothaveaproductCD, downloadVMwarePlayerfromhttp://www.vmware.com/download/player/. ThestepsbelowdescribeaninstallationfromaproductCD.Ifyoudownloadedthesoftware,followthe installationprocedure,butinstallfromthedirectorywhereyousavedtheinstallerfile(ratherthanthe WindowsorLinuxdirectoryontheCD). To install VMware Player on a Windows host 1 IfyouareinstallingVMwarePlayerfromaCDandautorunisenabled,followtheinstructionsdisplayed whenyouinserttheCDinyourCDROMdrive. IfyouareinstallingVMwarePlayerfromaCDandautorunisnotenabled,doubleclickthe VMware-player-<xxxx-xxxx>.exeinstallerfileintheWindowsdirectoryoftheCD.(Inthefilename, <xxxx-xxxx>isaseriesofnumbersrepresentingtheversionandbuildnumbers.) 2 3 4 5 OntheWelcomepage,clickNext. To install VMware Player on a Linux host 1 2 LogontoyourLinuxhostwiththeusernameyouplantousewhenrunningVMwarePlayer. Inaterminalwindow,becomerootsoyoucanperformtheinitialinstallationsteps:

Atthevmware-config.plprompts,acceptthedefaultvalues. NOTEIfyoudonotenablehostonlynetworkingwhenyouinstallVMwarePlayer,youcannotallowa virtualmachinetousebothbridgedandhostonlynetworking. Theconfigurationprogramdisplaysamessagesayingtheconfigurationcompletedsuccessfully.Ifyoudo notseetheconfigurationcompletionmessage,runtheconfigurationprogramagain.

Whenyouaredone,exitfromtherootaccount.Type:

Configuring the Linux Installation with vmware-config.pl


Usevmware-config.pltoconfigureyourLinuxinstallationofVMwarePlayer. NOTEIfyouinstallfromthetararchive,theinstallerstartstheconfigurationprogramforyouunlessyou specifyNoattheprompttorunvmware-config.pl. IfyouusetheRPMinstaller,youmustruntheconfigurationprogramfromthecommandline.

Required Configuration Changes

Starting VMware Player


ThissectiondescribeshowtostartVMwarePlayer. To start VMware Player and run a virtual machine 1 ToopenVMwarePlayer:

Afteryouaccepttheenduserlicenseagreement(EULA),theWelcomepageappears. 2 Browsefortheconfigurationfileofthevirtualmachinethatyouwanttoplay. YoucanalsoselectarecentlyusedvirtualmachineordownloadavirtualappliancefromtheVirtual ApplianceMarketplace. YoucanusethefieldFilesoftypetofilterthefilesthataredisplayedwhenyoubrowse. VMwarePlayercanopen.vmxVMwareconfigurationfiles.OnWindows,VMwarePlayercanalsoopen .vmcMicrosoftVirtualPCandVirtualServerfilesand.sv2iSymantecBackupExecSystemRecovery systemimages. 3 Enterorselectavirtualmachineconfigurationfile,andclickOpen. VMwarePlayeropensthevirtualmachineandpowersiton. Youcanalsoopenavirtualmachinebyrightclickingitsconfigurationfiletodisplayacontextmenufrom whichyoucanopenthevirtualmachineinVMwarePlayer.

Closing VMware Player


ThissectiondescribeshowtocloseVMwarePlayer. To close VMware Player Takeoneofthefollowingactions:

Shutdowntheguestoperatingsysteminthevirtualmachine. VMwarePlayerclosesaftertheguestoperatingsystemshutsdown.

InVMwarePlayer,chooseVMwarePlayer>Exit(Windows)orPlayer>Quit(Linux). VMwarePlayereithersuspendsorpowersoffthevirtualmachine,dependingonthepreferenceyouhave setforexitbehaviorinPlayer>Preferences.

Uninstalling VMware Player


ThefollowingsectionsgiveinstructionsforuninstallingVMwarePlayeronWindowsandLinuxhosts. To uninstall VMware Player on a Windows host other than Vista 1 2 3 IntheControlPanel,openAdd/RemovePrograms. SelecttheentryforVMwarePlayerandclickRemove. Followtheonscreeninstructions.

To uninstall VMware Player on a Windows Vista host 1 2 GotoStart>ControlPanel>Programs>Programs and Features>Uninstallaprogram. SelectVMwarePlayerandclickUninstall.

To uninstall an RPM installation of VMware Player on a Linux host IfyouusedtheRPMinstallertoinstallVMwarePlayer,removethesoftwarefromyoursystembyentering:


rpm -e VMware<xxxx-xxxx>

Inthiscommand,<xxxx-xxxx>isaseriesofnumbersrepresentingtheversionandbuild.IfyouhaveVMware Playerproperlyinstalled,youcanfindtheVMwarePlayerbuildnumberbyentering:
rpm -qa | grep VM

To uninstall a tar installation of VMware Player on a Linux host IfyouusedthetarinstallertoinstallVMwarePlayer,removethesoftwarefromyoursystembyentering:
