Research project proposal Title: Exploring Emerging Opportunities for Bangladesh T ourism

Introduction Bangladesh has great opportunities in this tourism sector. Tourism is one of the most important sectors for Bangladesh as a developing country. Increases in economic growth, disposable income and leisure time, political stability, and aggressive tourism campaigns, among others factors, have fuelled the significant growth of tourism. My research project will focus on exploring t he opportunities for Bangladesh tourism industries

Background Though Bangladesh is not so famous to the world wide, it has a bright future as a Tourism attraction include archeological sites, historic mosques and monuments, resorts, beaches, picnic spots, forest and wildlife. the largest port city of the country and known as the city of shrines; Mainamati, Mahasthangarh and Paharpur, archaeological treasures of Hindu and Buddhist rule in the country from 300 BC to 1200 AD ( Hossain, 2007). Above all, riverine beauty, colourful tribal culture and simple village life are the main factors for attracting visitors (Hossain and Hossain, 2002 ). Bangladesh is a riverine country having attractive panoramic beauty. There are hills, vales, deep and mangrove fores ts, rivers and the longest beach in the world. In this country, the scope of nature based tourism, research based tourism, culture based tourism and eco -tourism is quite evident. In Bangladesh, prospective areas are present, minimum infra-structural arrangement is developing, role of government is now positive, private and public organizations have come forward side by side to attract the local and foreign tourists, researchers, dignitaries and foreign delegates. Having all the minimum requirements, the tou rism industry could not develop adequately. The cracks of problem could not identify accurately because of paucity of sufficient number of research and investigations in our country. This could benefit the tourism industry in multiple ways. This could change the economic picture of tourism sector and contribute a big share in the GDP of Bangladesh.

Research question

It is often a useful stating point in the research that the research question to begin with one general focus research question that follows from my research idea. My research question is What are the emerging opportunities for Bangladesh tourism?

Research objectives

y y y

To identify development trends in Bangladesh tourism To analyse issues in tourism marketing in Bangladesh To identify potential strategies that can contribute to increasing the competitiveness Of Bangladesh tourism

This study will facilitate the decision makers to assess the intensity of the problem and to plan accurate measures to train and de velop a good number of manpower for facing the current need readily.

Research method

A Qualitative approach and in-depth interview method will adopt in order to gather primary information. The proposed project research will mainly based on primary, data will be collected through telephone conversation with Bangladesh Parjaton Corporation, online travel agency of Bangladesh and email correspondence to Bangladesh ministry of civil aviation and tourism.

Epistemology: Epistemology concerns what constitutes acceptable knowledge in the field. The Branch of philosophy that studies the nature of knowledge, its presuppositions and foundations, and its extent and validity. Epistemological stances are: Posi tivism, Realism, Interpretivism (Saunders et al , 2007).

Positivism: is based upon values of reason, truth and validity and there is focus purely on facts, gathered through direct observation and experience and measured empirically using quantitative methods surveys and experiments and statistical analysis.

Realism: is a branch of epistemology which is similar to positivism in that it assumes a scientific approach to the development of knowledge (Saunders et al, 200).

Interprtivism: is an epistemology that advocates it is necessary for the researchers to understand differences between humans role as social actors (Saunders et al, 200).

Ontology: Ontology is concerned with the nature of reality research. This raises questions of the assumptions researchers have about the way the world operates and the commitment held to particular views. (Saunders et al, 2007).

Objectivism: this portrays the position that entities exist in reality external to social actors in reality external to social actors concerned with their existence (Saunders et at, 2007).

Page 5

Subjectivism: subjectivism holds that social phenomena are created from the perceptions and consequent actions of those social actors concerned with their existence (Saunders et at, 2007).

Axiology: Axiology is a branch of philosophy that studies judgements about value; it is a process of social enquiry with (Saunders et al , 2007).

esear h Approa hes : The better research approach is depending on research questions one seeking to answer. Research is often a mixture between positive and interpretive, perhaps reflecting the stance of realism, where research project will involve the use of the theory. The theory may or may not be made explicit in the design of research, it though it will usually made explicit in the presentation and findings (Saunders et al , 2007).

There are two types of research approaches:

y y

Deductive approach & Inductive approach

Dedu tive approa h : once clear about the theory at the beginning of research where research can be deductive approach, in which the researcher can be develop theory and hypothesis and design a research strategy to test the hypothesis (sounders et at 2007).

igure 3. : dedu tive & indu tive approa hes .

Indu tive approa h: On the other hand inductive approach where researcher collects the data and develops the theory as a result of data analysis (sounders et at 2007). Saunders et al (2007) suggested the major differences between deductive and inductive approaches to research: -----------

Dedu tive Emphasis Scientific principles. Moving from theory to data. The need to explain casual relationships between variables. The collection of quantitative data.

Indu tive Emphasis Gaining an understand of the meanings human attach to events. A close understanding of the research context. The collection of qualitative data. A more flexible structure to permit changes of research emphasis as the research progresses. A realisation that the researcher is part of the research process. Less concern with the need to generalise.

The application of controls to ensure validity. The operationalisation of concepts to ensure clarity of definition A highly structured approach Researcher independence of what is being researched.

Research Strategies Research strategies are the plans how to carry out a research in search for data, results to solve problems and or management issues. According to Saunders et al (2007) strategies are classifies as follows: y y y y y y y

Experimental; Survey; Case study; Action research; Grounded theory; Ethnography and Archival research

Survey is very popular strategy for research. The survey strategy usually associated with the deductive approach. The board area of survey research encompasses any measurement procedures that involve asking questions of respondents. Most frequently used to answer who, where, what, how much and how many etc questi ons. Therefore it tends to be explanatory and descriptive research. It allows a large number of data to be collected among a sizeable population which can be standardised and allow to easy comparison.

Page 8

Choice The choice of my research is mixed method, mono method and multi method. In general, mixed research methods are considered as one of the three paradigms in which quantitative and qualitative techniques or other paradigm characteristics are confined in one overall study. The two major types of mixed research are distinguished as mixed method and mixed model research . Mixed method research is that in which the rese archer mixes both qualitative and Quantitative research approaches within a stage of the study or across two stages of the research process.

Selected research methodology Research philosophy in terms of epistemology for this project is positivist. The reason of being positivist is to focus purely on fact, gathered through direct observation and experience and measured empirically using qualitative methods surveys and experiments and statistical analysis. The view of the work is explanatory to ide ntify the emerging opportunities for Bangladesh. Survey will be the primary strategy of the research. Questionnaires are the primary method of my research and view is inductive.
