ACRONYMS (Dim Kiu)

1) Definition

Acronyms are new words formed from the initial letters of a set of words.
Ex: UNO: United Nations Organization WHO: World Health Organization 2) Pronunciation Saying each separate letter Ex: WB: World Bank (you say: /`d^blju: bi:/) Typically, saying acronyms as new single words. Ex: ASEAN /`zin/ (Association of South East Asian Nations) OPEC /`oupek/ (Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries) 3) Spelling There are 2 ways to write a acronym: Capital letters: WHO, WB Lowercase letters (when acronyms become every terms): radar, laser 4) Notices Names for organizations are often to have their acronyms (NATO: North Atlantic Treaty Organization, EEC: European Economic Community) Some new acronyms come into general use so quickly, people use them and dont care their component meanings (ATM, PIN)
