come down to our offensive line. When our
line is going, we never have a problem
putting points on the board. That is the
key.”
Last year when starting tailback Ruell
Ellis went down with an injury, sophomore
Paul Mason stepped in and played
admirably. He was also a key player in the
secondary making key interceptions that
thwarted drives. He had a stretch where he
had a pick in three-consecutive games.
“Mason is back and he ran the ball well
when he was in there,” said Mahoney. “P.J.
Rodriguez, who we lost to injury last year,
will also be back there. Most of the offen-
sive line is back. Scott Matthews is back at
wide out and while we lost Matt Pankey at
the split, we have some other options out
there.”
Mahoney thinks that this team has done
the work during the offseason in the weight
room and in the seven-on-seven
drills. They are ready, eager and most
importantly, have the blue-collar work eth-
ic that is the trademark of all Pompton
Lakes High School sports teams. STAFF PHOTO BY JOE SARNO

Other potential downfield targets for West Milford
include seniors Rich Comerford and Ricky D’Ellio.
Poppe describes the starting running back position

Matt Smith leading the charge.
Amid all of the changes that face the Highlanders,
one familiar face is eager to prove that West Milford

quarterback Brian Mizerek has the potential to lead
the team back to the playoffs in 2008.
“[Brian] has had a good career and he is looking for-

Rivals search for an edge in TODAY Cup series

LITTLE FALLS — New Jersey is home to quite a
few high school football rivalries, but it would
be difficult to imagine that any are more even-
ly matched than the Passaic Valley-Wayne Val-
ley rivalry. Passaic Valley holds a meager 28-
27-1 advantage in this border war, which
began in 1951.
Both programs will meet for the 57th time
in Week three on Friday, September 26 in Lit-
tle Falls. The winner will be awarded the fifth
annual TODAY Cup, a trophy sponsored by
the Wayne TODAY/Passaic Valley TODAY.
The series currently is even at two wins apiece.
The Hornets claimed the first-ever Cup game
in 2004 and last won the regular-season
matchup in 2006. The Indians have victories
in odd years in 2005 and 2007.
The rivalry has taken on an added twist in
the last two years when the teams met up in
the State Sectional Playoffs. In 2006, Passaic
Valley beat Wayne Valley in the regular season
and in the playoffs. The Indians returned the
favor last year, beating the Hornets twice.
Wayne Valley’s victory in last season’s
TODAY Cup game resulted in a 43-12 win in
front of a home crowd as the Indians
improved its record at the time to a perfect 5-
0 en route to an eventual third-straight con-
ference crown. A few weeks later, Wayne Val-
ley eliminated Passaic Valley in the opening PHOTO BY ALEX VROS
