SOLVED EXAMPLES

1. A piece of aluminium of density 2.6 g/ cm3

weighs 39 gf. What is its apparent weight if it is fully suspended in water?

4. A solid weighs 0.4 kgf in air and 0.35 kgf in

water. Calculate its volume and density. What will it weigh if half-suspended in a liquid of density 1200 kg/m3? (Density of water = 1000 kg/m3)

Ans. Volume of solid,

M V - --' ,- D, - 2.6 39

= 15 cm3

Ans. Apparent loss of weight in water

= VsDw.

Since Dw = 19/cm3 :. the apparent loss of weight in water = VD = 15sgf. w :. apparent weight = weight in air apparent loss = 39 - 15 = 24 gf.

0.4 - 0.35 = 0.05 = V x 1000 ,

5. A piece of wood of density 0.75 g/ cm3 has

a volume of SO cm3 Calculate (i) its weight, (ii) its volume submerged, (iii) the volume above water when it floats, and (iv) the weight to be placed on it, for it to be just submerged.

3. A solid weighs 33 gf in air and 24 gf when
totally immersed in a liquid of density 0.75 g/cm3 Calculate its volume and density.

Ans. (i) M, = Vp, = SO x 0.75 = 60 g. :. Weight = 60 gf.
