Delta Kappa Gamma Society International Area 10 May 2011 Chapter Presidents: May has always been a special

month in Delta Kappa Gamma. On May 11th, we celebrate Founders Day. The following is taken from Our Heritage, Volume 1. It was late afternoon of a balmy spring day-May 11, 1929-when a few friends of Dr. Annie Webb Blanton gathered at 2610 Whitis Avenue in Austin, Texas. The large two story, red brick house with its Victorian cupolas was listed in the telephone directory as the University Faculty Womens Club. Great oaks shaded the veranda where Dr. Blanton greeted her Austin friends and those who had come by train to help her found Kappa Gamma Delta, later to be renamed The Delta Kappa Gamma Society. Sensitive to the desirability for mutual appreciation and broad understanding among women educators, Dr. Blanton had decided that the membership of each chapter should be representative of different kinds of educational work. This unique feature of Delta Kappa Gamma was exemplified in her choice of the founding group. Acceptances to the invitation had come from a grade teacher, a dean of women, two high school teachers of history and one of mathematics, three elementary school principals, college teachers of psychology, physical education, and elementary education. Dr. Blanton herself was professor of rural education at the University of Texas. Since women high school principals were nonexistent in Texas, the first state unit of Texas was quite representative of a cross section of the profession. For the founder, this was a deep time of satisfaction for the idea which had been in her mind for several years and now crystallized. Yet there were a few disappointments. Several people lacking faith in the venture, or believing that they had no time for such an organization, or fearing the criticism of their masculine employers, had declined her invitation. (It had been Dr. Blantons hope that there would be fifteen founders.) Even Dr. Blanton started out with a few setbacks. So you see, you are not the only one who runs into difficulty when planning something for your chapter. Everything does not always run perfect. Take a lesson from our founders and continue to strive to do good work for your chapter. Keep in mind our mission statement, The Delta Kappa Gamma Society International promotes professional and personal growth of women educators and excellence in education. Celebrate May! Celebrate our Founders! Celebrate your chapters achievements! Celebrate your members achievements! Celebrate the Bells ringing! Celebrate being a Delta Kappa Gamma Woman with such a deep meaningful history!

There were four members who transferred to the new chapter and an initiation was held for fourteen new members. One member, currently in Japan, was initiated via Skype. The cost of the roses is $37.48. The money to pay for these roses will come from the funds left over from the Area 10 luncheon. 2011-2013 Area Coordinator Joanne Davis, Delta Kappa Gamma Society International President-Elect, has appointed Sandy Borden (Epsilon Nu) as the new Area 10 Coordinator for the next biennium. You have all heard the sound of the bell and have used the words Believe, Engage, Learn and Lead in your meetings this past year. From the meetings I have attended and the newsletters and yearbooks I have read, I am totally impressed with your chapter programs and projects. You are a great leader in your chapter and I know that next year you will continue to serve your chapter members with strength and confidence. Hugs, Jeanette Rhyan Area 10 Coordinator
