WHOLE LANGUAGE PHILOSOPHY

Recently, The educational paradigm has begun to move from a TRADITIONAL model of learning and teaching, which is based upon behavioristic principles, toward a TRANSACTIONAL model.

Behaviorism supports the idea that learning takes place from part to whole (the same way a child learns to read). The transactional model is based upon the Whole language set of beliefs.

ITS ROOTS: The WHOLE LANGUAGE PHILOSOPHY is grounded in Progressive Education, which entails understanding that individuals learn best in real-life activities and interacting with others.

TEACHER & STUDENT Classrooms are STUDENT-CENTERED

The teacher acts as a FACILITATOR, and the student is an ACTIVE participant in the learners' community.

How is Whole Language Philosophy different from the Traditional Approach?

Learners are actively engaged with their teachers, classmates, and their enviroment to create their own curriculum. it is not prescribed. Language students learn better when:

they are in AUTHENTIC, MEANINGFUL situations rather than in artificial ones. Language is NOT separated into parts: whole language integrates READING, WRITING, LISTENING, SPEAKING.

EL MODO DE EXPRESIN DEL LENGUAJE VA A CONDICIONAR EL MODO DE PERCEPCIN DEL NIO.

Students constuct meaning from the world that surrounds them, and not by imitating (traditional). Language learning is not a mere progression of isolated skills, as it was in the traditional approach. Reading, writing, oral language skills develop simultaneously.

Unlike traditional teachers who assume their students will develop within the limits of his expectations, transactional teachers provide experiences that encourage students to reach an IMPROVED level of competence

Learning occurs when students are given opportunities to think, to create, to make mistakes as they move toward TRUE DISCOVERY
