Zinc Oxide USP 31

Synonyms: Zinc White, Lana o Algodon Filosoficos, Flores de Zinc Preparation: manufactured by heating strongly in a furnace a mixture of coke (impure form of carbon obtained by destructive distillation of coal or petroleum) and a zinc mineral wherein the free metallic zinc is liberated and vaporized Vapors are passed up to a tower where a strong current of air is encountered and burns forming zinc oxide.

Preparation: Examples of zinc minerals mixed in coke: calamine (Zn2SiO4.H2O), willemite (Zn2SiO4), smithsonite (ZnCO3), franklinite (ZnO admixed with oxides of iron and manganese), zincite (red variety of ZnO) Medicinal grade of zinc oxide made by calcinations of zinc carbonate in a shallow vessel until small amount of the heated product no longer gives effervescence when treated with a dilute mineral acid.

Uses: Mild Astringent Weak Antimicrobial Compound *antimicrobial-astringent action is due to the release of a small amount of zinc ion from hydrolysis in the acidic moisture of the skin Topical Protective ointments, pastes, dusting powders (treatment of a skin ulceration and other dermatological problems) Dusting powder found in combination with other protectives and antimicrobial agents (e.g. talc and boric acid) Primary ingredient of Calamine USP
