MS2140 ENGINEERING THERMODYNAMICS I

Semester I 2011/2012
Problem Set 1 Deadline: Tuesday, August 23, 2011 at 09.00 a.m.

1.

(a) Consider a solar water heater installation shown in Figure 1. If the solar collector is chosen as a system, identify locations where the system interacts with its surroundings, and describe changes occurring within the system with time from a morning to noon in a clear day. Determine whether the system is a control mass or a control volume. (b) Repeat the problem, but with all components (i.e. the solar collector, the hot storage tank, the pump, and the piping between them) as the system.

2. Consider Figure 2. Repeat similar questions in Problem 1, but for systems that consist of the following components: (a) battery only, (b) battery, motor, and cables between them, (c) motor, rope, and mass. 3. Do problem 1.36 in Morans Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, 6th Ed. 4. Do problem 1.50 in Morans Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, 6th Ed. 5. Do problem 1.51 in Morans Fundamentals of Engineering Thermodynamics, 6th Ed.
