Cornament on Tap for Sat., Aug. 27, 1 p.m.

It has been called many things, Corn Toss, Bean Bag, Bean Toss, Soft Horseshoes, Indiana Horseshoes, but to many of us born and raised in Kentucky and the southern part of Ohio, the game is passionately referred to as Cornhole. It has been said that the game originated in Germany in the 14th century, and then was rediscovered in the hills of Kentucky over 100 years ago. The truth is, who really knows, but the game is great fun for all ages and can be played anywhere. When corn bags fly you know a tournament is underway or some might call it a cornament! The Junior Fairboard will sponsor a Cornhole Tournament on Saturday, August 27 at 1 p.m. at the Rabbit and Poultry Barn. Registration begins at 12:00 noon . The competition will have three categories: 12 & younger, 13-17, and 18 & older. There will be a $5 per person entry fee. Prizes will include payback and plaques. Plaques are sponsored by Safe Auto Insurance, Rangle Investments LLC, Medi-Home Health, Yoho Construction, Francis J. Paulus Insurance Agency and Midway Community Center.

The demonstration will focus on five topics: awareness of grain bin dangers, actions to take prior to the arrival of first responders, extrication techniques using a coffer dam, types of grain bin injuries, and treatment of grain bin injuries. To demonstrate the objectives a grain trailer filled with corn will be used. Andy Bauer, a lifetime farmer who helped to form the Champaign Landmark Bin Rescue Team in 2006, will lead the live demonstration. Barnesville Hospital To Host Safety and Rescue Program During Fair

In 2010, there were 51 reported grain entrapments in the United States, up from 38 cases in 2009. Twenty-six of those were fatal. Over the past decade, 19 deaths have been recorded in Ohio related to flowing grain involving grain wagons, grain bins, feed mills, grain hoppers and other grainrelated equipment. Its because of one of these tragedies that a group of rescuers began to offer grain bin safety workshops throughout Ohio to help prevent entrapments and to prepare first responders in case of emergency. For anyone who works with grain in storage bins, loading, unloading and moving it, you should take time to recognize the hazards of flowing grain and how to prevent a grain entrapment situation. People can become caught or trapped in grain in three different ways: the collapse of bridged grain, the collapse of a vertical wall of grain, and entrapment in flowing grain. Moving or flowing grain is involved

While most people were enjoying the 2010 Monroe County Fair, local fire and EMS personnel were gaining knowledge in farm accident rescue and treatment in a training exercises sponsored by Barnesville Hospital and MedFlight of Columbus. This year Barnesville Hospital will host a grain bin safety and rescue program Aug. 25, 5-9 p.m. at Ackerman Photo the new pavilion, located near the secretarys office.

Grain Bin Safety & Rescue Program

in all three. Flowing grain will not support the weight of a person. It will pull a person down and into the grain mass as it flows. The suction action is strong enough that a person cannot swim, climb, or walk against it and get out. As grain flows out of a bin the victim will be pulled down and under very quickly with little time to react. A person cannot be pulled from flowing grain without risk of injury to the spinal column if the grain is at waist level or higher. the grain will have a very strong grip on the body. Research has shown that up to 400 lbs. of pull is required to extract a body from waist-deep grain. That is more than enough force to permanently damage someones spinal column. Barnesville Hospital will be providing an opportunity for firefighters, EMTs, paramedics and other rescue personnel to earn continuing education credits by participating in a live demonstration of grain
