SHIV SENA iv Sen


 SHIV SENA means Army of Shiv, referring to Shivaji.  SHIV SENA is a far-right political party in India founded on June 19, 1966 by Balasaheb Thackeray, Son of Prabodhankar Thackeray (Prominent leader in the Samyukta Maharashtra Samiti that led to the integration of Maharashtra in 1960), who resigned from the active leadership and gave the position to his son Uddhav.

ORIGIN
 BALASAHEB THACKERAY WAS A CARTOONIST WHO PUBLISHED SATIRICAL CARTOONS  SHIV SENA WAS STARTED BY DR. BALASAHEB THACKERAY.  HE FOUND SHIV SENA, A POLITICAL ORGANISATION TO FIGHT FOR THE RIGHTS OF MARATHI MANOOS

RAJ THACKERAY SPLIT


 In December 2005 Raj Thackeray, Bal Thackeray's nephew, left the party.  Founded Maharashtra Navnirman Sena (MNS).  Clashes have occurred between followers of the two Senas.  Raj Thackeray considers himself an Indian nationalist (not just a regionalist) and claims that the Congress is two-faced.

Party Structure
 As the Pramukh (Chief) of the party Balasaheb Thackeray takes all major decisions.  Shiv Sainiks, and carry out most of the party's grassroots work.  Sena Bhavan located in the Dadar locality is the headquarters of the Sena since 1976.  The Sena's shakhas (Branches) spread throughout the state of Maharashtra.

RECENT ELECTORAL VICTORIES

 Shiv Sena was victorious in local Maharashtra elections on February 2007, together with Bharatiya Janata Party in the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation.

 The victory was noteworthy for reasons more than one.  It was also a relief to the Junior Thackeray who personally supervised the campaign strategy.

WORKS
Claims of benefits to Maharashtraians
   Benefited the Marathi Manus in Mumbai, especially in the public sector. Makes sure jobs created are offered to Marathi people. Publicizing nepotism in corporations that operate in Maharashtra.

Use of Marathi
 Marathi has been an official language in the corporation since 1971, however English and Hindi were used for distribution of information.

WORKS
Dharavi Emancipation
 Emancipation of 500,000 slum dwellers in the Dharavi area of Mumbai, the largest slum in Asia.

Improvements in infrastructure
 Nearly 40 flyovers in Mumbai and the Mumbai- Pune Expressway were constructed.  The Shiv Sena has supported initiatives such as the "Conditional Access System" for television networks.

WORKS
Mahila Aghadi
 Mahila Aghadi, settles domestic disputes; from dowry demands to wife beating.  Through the use of aggressive tactics, they have reduced the instance of violence against women.

Minority support
 Certain minority communities support SHIV SENA since they see a possible support of Zionism in the Shiv Sena.

 The novelist and Nobel laureate V. S. Naipaul mentioned the Shiv Sena in his book India: A Wounded Civilization:  Writer Suketu Mehta discussed the Shiv Sena in Maximum City, his book on Mumbai.
