CONTRACTOR SELECTED FOR SMC RENOVATION PROJECT ConTech Awarded $13.9 Million Project
Watertown, New York ----- Samaritan Medical Center is pleased to announce that ConTech Building Systems, Inc. (Gouverneur, New York) has been awarded the $13.9 million construction contract for the hospitals renovations and additions. SMC has been working closely with the architects and engineers from Bernier Carr Associates to complete the design of approximately 82,000 square feet of space slated for renovation. Eight pre-qualified construction firms were invited to submit bids for the renovation project, and bids from six of those firms were received. ConTech was selected based on experience, qualifications and cost. The firm submitted the lowest bid for the overall project. Major highlights of the project include: A consolidated outpatient testing/registration area in the former Emergency Department Relocation and expansion of the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) Conversion of 5-Pratt medical/surgical unit to private patient rooms for orthopaedic patients Connecting corridor between Samaritan Medical Center and Samaritan Keep Home. Now that this selection has been made, ConTech is expected to begin mobilizing their crews for commencement of construction on or around September 15th. One of the first projects to begin will be the two-level connector between Samaritan Medical Center and Samaritan Keep Home. Construction of this much-anticipated corridor between the facilities will bisect Pratt Street and the hospitals Washington Street parking lot. Access to Washington Street via Pratt Street will no longer be possible; Chestnut Street and Woodruff Street will be the closest cross-streets. This renovation project is the final phase of SMCs multimillion dollar expansion and modernization project, which broke ground in April 2008. A 350-car parking garage opened in December 2009, followed by a four-level 130,000 square foot patient care pavilion, which opened in November 2010. ###
