We have heard complaints from residents of the holy city of Jaffa and its environs that a few months ago
an individual came to Jaffa and organized a number of congregants and called himself the rabbi of Jaffa
and its environs, and made himself a stamp imprinted with the title rabbi of Jaffa and its environs.
We cry out against this despicable action, that a person should come to a major Jewish community
that has a rabbi, a celebrated gaon who has been accepted as rabbi by the community, and takes the
crown to himself, to take away the income of the city rabbi, and in particular to call himself the rabbi of
the entire city and its environs, to fool the people
Trembling seized us when we heard such evil news, that our holy Torah should be disregarded
and the halachic authorities trampled on, so that whoever wishes to take the crown to be a halachic
authority may do so and bring his own ritual slaughterer and override the authority of the rabbi and ritual
slaughterer, may they live, whom the people have relied upon for many years

We who are signed below are shocked and [illegible] to hear this evil report, that such a thing
