POLICE INVESTIGATE SHOOTING On Saturday, September 3, 2011, at approximately 1:30 p.m., Grand Rapids Police responded to the 800 block of Prince St. SE, on the report of a shooting. Upon arrival, officers learned that a six year old shooting victim had been taken to an area hospital to get treated for a gunshot wound he had just suffered. Witnesses indicated to officers that the victim, a South Bend, Indiana resident was standing near his fathers truck near the road when he was struck by a bullet. Witnesses heard a gunshot but could not determine where the shot came from. The father of the victim had taken him to the hospital. Officers searched the area and found that the shot had come from a house on Worden St. SE. The resident of that home was cooperative with police. A subsequent search of the house was conducted. Residents in the area assisted officers in identifying the suspect that shot the gun. The suspect was taken into custody, without incident, at Kalamazoo Ave. and Worden St. The 18 year old suspect, a Grand Rapids resident, told police that he was shooting a pistol at a fence when he accidently shot the victim. The victim suffered a single gunshot wound to the left thigh. Initial reports from the hospital indicated that the wound was non-life threatening in nature. The suspect was lodged at the Kent County Correctional Facility. The incident will be reviewed by the Prosecutors Office on Sunday, September 04, 2011.
