Marcel Jiz De Ortega 1MUS4 Music Listening

Reaction Paper

An orchestra is like family of different instruments. The Conductor is the head of this family for he keeps the order and harmony of the instruments. The key factor to a wonderful orchestra is the harmony and the cooperation of the different sounds of the instruments. Each has a different tone colour and it is up to the conductor to utilize each of the instruments sounds, to use it to complement each other. The UST Symphony Orchestra is the first orchestra, and so far the best orchestra I have seen live. They were great. The sound was amazing. Each instrument played a role and each note was given life. I noticed that in an orchestra, there were more violins than the other instruments. However their sound still remains high pitched. When not played carefully a violin has a tendency to produce a sound that is irritating to hear. The violas are there to balance this sound. Their shape is slightly bigger thus they create a bigger sound. An orchestra is a mixture of different sounds. The instruments with the most distinct tones are the Harp, Bassoon, Contrabass and the Trumpet. Those were the instruments that I find easy to distinguish in an orchestra. I also find the percussion instruments amazing because even though some instruments were small, (tambourine & triangle) their sound was enough to be heard all throughout the concert hall. Truly this memory is one I will never forget, and again I am looking forward to watching the USTSO orchestra because they made classical music enjoyable for me.
