DYLAN JOHN MAZZIOTTI FILM IN SOCIETY WEEK 8 ASSIGNMENT A My selection from the scenes in SHREK for sound design

is an action packed scene (Track 7-8 on the DVD), when our hero Shrek and his sidekick Donkey are at the castle to rescue Princess Fiona up in the tower guarded by the dragon. In the next few paragraphs, I will be discussing the sound design per each element.

The first sound element introduced into the scene was the score. The musical score that is used is very eerie, it creates the suspense for when they encounter the dragon and exploring the castle. Once they encounter the dragon, rescue the princess, and are escaping, the music becomes very fast paced and like a chase with violin peaks and horn blows in moments of fear, building the scene.

The second element, that I noticed ,was the echoing of Shrek and Donkeys voices inside the castle. They echoed off of the walls and created great depth. Their voices also varied the echo in the speakers and depth depend on their location. The sound of the dragons fire breath was very strong and forceful.

The third and final element are the foley effects for the characters interactions with the props such as Shreks armor, the large castle door, chains, swords and crashing into the walls and other objects. Similar to the echoing of their voices, these sound had different depths depending on location. In closing, the sounds were done very well. It didnt really add much or any humor or meaning to the movie but did give the atmosphere more depth.
