2009-2010 Newsletter Inside this issue...

Greetings Update on the Sweetheart 2010 Auction Newly elected officers Spring Pledge Class

Those of you that are receiving this newsletter are either still involved with the chapter or are looking to hear how things are going. The 2009-2010 school year has been one of the hardest to date in Iota Thetas long history. There have been a number of changes made at the University of Dayton in the administration as well as the way UD operates. Throughout the year the chapter has been put on a cease and desist action, social probation, and university probation. While this may appear overwhelming we were not alone at UD as most of the fraternities and sororities suffered a similar fate. Each and every brother of the Iota Theta chapter was patient and compliant to the universitys demands allowing us to continue our life long pursuit of the White Cross as we are back on the universities good graces and are ready to have a fantastic 2010-2011 academic year.

Greetings from the Iota Theta Chapter of Sigma Chi

Iota Theta Chapter

Andrew P. Walters
Iota Theta 2009-2010 President

2009 Spring Pledge Class
The Spring of 2009 brought in six eager individuals that we at the Iota Theta Chapter felt would be a great addition to the chapter. Led by Senior Sig Magister Kyle Kreutzinger and assistants Steve VonDrasek, Tommy Schaffer, Nick Baumgartner, and Jon Kenney they were taken through pledgeship and truly exemplified the ideals that we support. Each are sophomores at the University of Dayton that really came together throughout pledging. The newly initiated brothers are pictured to the right.

2009-2011 Sweetheart
Laura Graham is a junior at the University of Dayton majoring in psychology and minoring in communications and religious studies. She is from Carmel, Indiana, and is planning to go to graduate school to become a psychologist. Ideally she would like to work on the west coast for the warm weather. This summer she has an internship with the Big Shoulders Fund in Chicago for the month of June. In July Lauras plan is to go up to Northern Michigan with her family and volunteer at a womens shelter taking some time off to spend on the lake wake boarding and sailing. When asked about how Laura has felt about being brought back for another term as our sweetheart she said, I consider myself so privileged to be involved with such an extraordinary group of men. The Sigma Chis have had an immensely positive impact on my college career, serving as my closest and most dear friends... and now brothers. I am inspired by the character, determination, and loyalty of these men and will always hold them in high esteem. I could not be happier to have the title of Iota Theta Sweetheart, as it is an honor I consider invaluable. Well Laura we value everything you do for us and we consider it an honor to have you as our sweetheart. Thank you for everything that you do Laura!

Thank you to our advisors
The Iota Theta chapter would like to extend its deepest gratitude to our new faculty and chapter advisors Jeff Neace and Andrew Reardon. The university has required that the positions be separate and these brothers stepped up and helped out a chapter in need. Andrew has attended multiple meetings and has provided an immense amount of advise to the chapter in times of need. Jeff has been there for us whenever we have asked him too and especially helped us out when the faculty advisor position needed to be filled.

New ideas for where to hold initiation

If anyone in the Dayton, OH, region has an available space that we would be able to hold initiation we are looking for a new location. Our previous location which has allowed us to use their space for years is now shutting down and we are eager to find somewhere else before the property is purchased. For any suggestions or opportunities please e-mail kustos Tim Kott at kotttims@notes.udayton.edu.

Thank you to our House Corporation

The Iota Theta Chapter was privileged enough to receive a brand new television and entertainment unit this summer. The two men that have always been there for this chapter purchased the TV and put together the entertainment center that you can see pictured at right. The Iota Theta chapter has never asked or pleaded with these brothers to help us out, they are always there. Steve Bailey and Travis Tangeman have helped out the Iota Theta Chapter immensely through the years and continue to do so. Both of them take countless hours out of their day to help out 60 college men whenever needed. So thank you Steve and Travis for everything you do.

2010 Auction
Parents, siblings, aunts, uncles, and grandparents of Sigma Chis came to town the weekend of February 12th and 13th for the 20th annual Sigma Chi Parents Weekend. The event is dedicated to raising money for Dayton Childrens Hospital, part of The Fraternitys national philanthropy, Childrens Miracle Network. The weekend kicked off with a reception at the fraternity house on Friday night for early arrivals. With Fat Tuesday being the following week, we chose a Mardi Gras theme for the evening. Hosted by the Dayton Area Sigma Chi House Corporation, the welcoming reception was catered by one of the areas great restaurants, El Meson. Parents feasted on gallo pinto-Costa Rican rice and black beans with onion, tomatoes, and cilantro, beef emapanadillas, manchego cheese puffs, Chicken Tinga & tri color tortilla chips, chorizo in love apples, smoked salmon quesadilla, and a host of hors doeuvres. As is tradition, parents and family spent Saturday touring campus, shopping, and relaxing. Saturday evening the chapter held a reception, silent auction, banquet, program, and live auction at the Dayton Marriott. After dinner, U.D. Alumnus David Rivelli 06 was honored with the K. Stephen Bailey Alumni Award and the chapter honored the 2009-2010 Sweetheart of Sigma Chi, Ms. Laura Graham. Following the evening program, Sigma Chi kicked off the Live Auction part of the nightbenefiting, in part, Dayton Childrens Hospital. Since 1999, Sigma Chi Parents Weekend and Sigma Chi Derby Days have provided over $37,000 to Dayton Childrens.

Presidents Last Remarks
As a graduating senior I cannot think of anything else to say but thank you. The past four years have without a doubt been the best four years of my life. Coming into UD I was from a high school with four best friends that were like brothers to me. Leaving home behind was very difficult, especially to go to a school six hours away. Yet, somehow after going through pledging and being initiated into the Iota Theta chapter I quickly realized that there was something special at this school and with this chapter. Spending three and a half years within this great organization has been the best learning experience that anyone can ask for. I will never forget those who have helped me through the tough times and been there for me when I needed them most. To the alumni, active brothers, and all those affiliated with Sigma Chi I would like to extend my deepest gratitude for all you have done. I will never forget the times that I had and the people that I have had the privilege of meeting. The University of Dayton and the Sigma Chi Fraternity have created an environment that is like nowhere else. I hope that the new leaders of the fraternity understand how lucky you are. While taking a position is a big commitment it is also one of the greatest learning opportunities you will ever have. I have held three positions since I was initiated and still feel as though I owe the fraternity more. Being president of this outstanding organization was the greatest experience I could have ever asked for. I wish the new officers and active brothers the best of luck and ask that they do everything they can while you are here because this experience is taken away from you much faster than you think. Again, thank you to everyone for a great three and a half years. I will never forget the memories and experiences that I have created at Dayton my second home. Guard Well,

Andrew P. Walters
