Presentation on Printers

Topic: Dot Matrix printer

Presentation by Bilal Sardar

INTRODUCTION
The Dot-matrix printer is one of the earliest printers, they were available since the pcs. This printer has print head that runs back and forth, or in an up and down motion, on the page . The printers were used in early 70s n 80s. It prints by impact, striking an ink-soaked cloth ribbon against the paper, much like the print mechanism on a typewriter. The dot matrix printer is also called Impact printer

Example of Dot Matrix printers

Working Mechanism
Each dot is produced by a tiny metal rod, also called a "wire" or "pin", which is driven forward by the power of a tiny electromagnet or solenoid, either directly or through small levers. These tiny pins were strike against the ribbon which was soaked in ink. The number of the pins detemined the quality of printing . The most common types are 9 pin and 24 pin. More the pins the greater the quality.

Graphical representation.

The pin connected to the spring and behind it there is a electro magnet connected with the circuit. The paper is placed after the ribbon and when the circuit is closed and then opened then a hammering effect is produced which cause the pin to strike on the ribbon and then emboss the print on to the paper.

Daisy Wheel Printer

It consisit of a wheel type structure and works on the same principle as of dot matrix.
More of the impact printers are there but here only the most common were displayed!

Band printer In this type of printer the Required characters placed in The chains which is then sriked With the head, same principle As that of dot-matrix.

Dot matrix printer issues

Conclusion
The use of dot matrix in disappearing day by day. It has been limited to small commercial space machines such as a shop cash register in which a receipt is printed with a impact printer on the paper enrolled on a drum, the other use is the credit card swipe machine! The More commercial use or a personnel use is now nearly extinct although many small organizations seems to be using such technology today as well such as low grade schools! The future of impact printers is dark, the only place which I see where such printers are to be seen next is the science and technology museum.
