Semester 1: Unit of Inquiry How we organize ourselves

Central Idea: People use language and arts to celebrate their culture and tradition. Inquiry Into: The meaning of celebrations. Similarities and differences between celebrations. What celebrations look, sound and taste like.

Key Questions: What is a celebration? What celebrations do you share with your family? (Wedding photosthis was a big celebration for me/my family)? What is celebrated in your culture? How does language influence your celebration? What are some celebratory words that you use (for example Eid Mubarak)? Key Concepts: Perspective Reflection Form Key Skills:

Communication - written, oral and visual. Research recording and interpreting data. Reflection - reviewing and revising.
Assessment: Self evaluation via rubrics. Peer assessment. Teacher assessment.

Math and Language Arts for Lets Celebrate Unit.

Maths Review and extend patterns and sorting according to different attributes Venn diagrams. Review and extend adding and subtracting. Fact families Counting in 1s, 2s, 3s, 4s, 5s and 10s. Ongoing: Develop and extend mathematical vocabulary. Review basic number bonds. Problem solving with addition and subtraction.

Language Arts Investigate the structure that makes up a variety of different poems, including acrostic, haiku, shape and colour poems. Venn diagrams to compare two pieces of writing. Mind mapping of main ideas. Ongoing: Journal writing Paired, silent and guided reading Home reading programme Listen to and retell stories. Grammar and punctuation activities. Spelling and phonics. Comprehension activities
