La Sorbonne

Created By Andres Jacobo

A Brief History Robert de Sorbonne founded the school in 1257. In the 17th Century, Cardinal Richelieu restored the college. Upon his death, he was buried in the chapel. After the French Revolution of 1789, Napoleon made La Sorbonne a part of the University of Paris.

Influence in Paris
Originally, public lectures at the Sorbonne allowed theology students of all social classes to attend.
During The Enlightenment, the school supported Catholicism and was acknowledged by several popes. La Sorbonne helped France make literary advances through its printing and distribution of books.

In Modern Times
La Sorbonne was rebuilt in 1883 to meet the demands of increasing students. The only building still standing is the chapel.

Graduate students with masters degrees can earn their doctorate and post-doctoral degrees at la Sorbonne. Many international students travel to Paris to take challenging and unique courses. (Greek, Archeology, and Romanian included.)
