• The Taj Mahal, designed as a
tomb for the wife of a 17th-
century Mughal emperor,
was constructed by about
20,000 workers from 1632 to
1648 in Āgra, a city in
northern India. The massive
domed structure was
constructed in the Indo-
Islamic style, using white
marble and inlaid gems. At
each corner is a minaret
(prayer tower), and
passages from the Qur'an
(Koran), the Muslim holy
book, adorn the outside
walls. The bodies of the
emperor and his wife remain
in a vault below the building.

Delhi's preeminence
among Indian cities was
confirmed when, in
1638, Shah Jahan
moved his capital to
Delhi from Agra

sandstone and marble
tower was constructed
in the 13th century by
Qutubuddin Aybak, the
Muslim founder of the
Delhi Sultanate, and his
successors. The tower
has five stories, each
with a balcony.

Lotus Temple, it is built of
white marble in the shape of
a half-opened lotus flower.
Baha’i is a
nondenominational religious
faith founded in the late 19th
century. The world’s largest
Baha’i community is found
in India, where about 2
million people adhere to the
faith. Social aims based in
the principles of the Baha’i
faith include the abolition of
racial and religious
prejudice.
