SUBJUNCTIVE S

PRESENT SUBJUNCTIVES
S + suggest/recommend/advise/demand/insist + that + Noun + V1 (bare infinitive) It + be + Adjective/V3 + that + Noun + V1 (bare infinitive)

Examples:

We recommend that everyone be at the opening ceremony tomorrow morning. It is essential that every child have the same educational opportunities. The teacher suggested that Frank study harder at home. It was advised that she talk to her advisor immediately.

PAST SUBJUNCTIVES

wish/if only/ would rather/as if/ as though + Simple Past regrets about the present I wish I were there right now. I am not there right now. I dont mid cooking dinner, but I would rather you did it. It is better for me if you cook dinner. We have been here for too long. Its time we went home. We should have gone home earlier.

If only I were an actress. I am not an actress. He acts as if/as though he were a movie star. Actually, he is not a movie star.

PAST PERFECT SUBJUNCTIVES


wish/if only/ would rather/as if/ as though + Past Perfect regrets about the past

He wishes he hadnt been careless that night. He was careless that night. Larry spoke to the old woman as if he had known her very well. Actually Larry didnt know the old woman well. If only we had arrived at the concert on time. We were late to the concert. I would rather she had sent me a letter. She didnt send me a letter.
