Exercise: Implementing a subnet

A note about exercises

This exercise is designed for practice use and does not contain new learning
content. If your computer doesn't have an application or applications required to
carry out the exercise tasks, or if you would prefer to perform the exercise at
another time, you can proceed to the next topic.

Scenario

You are a network administrator and you are maintaining a Class B network with
the private IP address 172.16.0.0. You want to improve the network's overall
performance so you decide to subnet the network.

Exercise

Your assignment for this exercise is to consider how to subnet your network.

Task list
Number Instructions

1 How many usable subnets are created if 4 bits are borrowed?

2 What is the subnet mask of the address 172.16.0.0 if you borrow 4 bits from the host
field?

3 How many usable subnets can be created if 6 bits are borrowed from the IP network
address?

Review your solution and when you are satisfied with it, e-mail it to the Network +
2005 expert at the following address: ME00308@skillsoft.com.
