CAUSES OF THE DISASTER

The magnitude 8.9 Tokyo earthquake on March 11, 2011, which occurred near the northeast coast of Honshu, Japan, resulted from thrust faulting on or near the subduction zone plate boundary between the Pacific and North America plates. Subduction is when an oceanic plate slips underneath a continental plate, and they drag against one another. Force builds up over time, and then they suddenly slip, causing an uplift in the ocean floor. The gigantic release of mechanical energy caused the earthquake, while the sudden shift of a massive amount of water caused the subsequent tsunami.

CONSEQUENCES OF THE DISASTER

People will be affected for years to come due to radiation and the Japanese economy especially the car industry is suffering.
