1. With the help of simple sketches, explain the difference between lap-winding and wavewinding. 2. Explain the principle of operation of a DC motor. 3. 6. (a) What is Armature reaction? Discuss the effects of armature reaction. How can it be reduced? (6) (b) A 500V, wave wound 750 rpm shunt generator supplies a load of 105 A. The armature has 720 conductors and 120 commutator segments. The shunt field resistance is 100 ohm. Find the demagnetizing AT/pole if the brushes are advanced through three commutator segments at this load. (4) OR 7(a) Explain the different methods of excitation of DC Generators with suitable diagrams. (4) (b) The no load saturation curve for a generator operating at 1800 rpm is given by the following data : Eg : If : 8 0 40 0.5 74 1.0 113 1.5 152 2.0 213 3.0 234 3.5 248 4.0 266 5.0 278 6.0 P.T.O i) ii) Plot the no load curve for 1500 rpm Calculate the generated voltage, when the generator is operating on no load with a field current of 4.6 A and at a speed of 1000 rpm. (6)

8. With neat sketches explain the process of commutation in DC machines and methods of improving commutation. (10) OR 9. Explain with neat sketches the main parts of a DC machine. Describe their functions. (10)

10 (a) Derive the expression for back emf in a DC motor. Explain the significance of back emf in a d.c. motor and explain how it controls the value of armature current in d.c. motor? (6) (b) A 250V d.c. shunt machine has line current of 80A. It has armature and field resistances of 0.1 and 125 respectively. Calculate power developed in armature when running as a motor. (4) OR 11(a) Derive an expression f or speed of a D.C. Motor in terms of back e.m.f. and flux per pole. (4) (b) A 4-pole, long shunt, lap wound generator supplies 25kw at a terminal voltage of 500V. The armature resistance is 0.03, series field resistance is 0.04 and shunt field resistance is 200. The brush drop may be taken as 1 V. Determine the e mf generated. (6)
