CHAPTER 5

SUGGESTIONS AND CONCLUSIONS

5.1

LISTENING AND WATCHING LINKS THROUGH THE INTERNET The English Language syllabus in Malaysia should try to accommodate programmes

which establish links to institutions like The British councils . For example, by linking to The British Council , students (as English language learner) can listen or watch on the computer, or download audio and video files to their MP3 player. This should be effective as all of their audio and video materials are accompanied by language practice activities that students can do on their computer while they listen or watch. Besides, they can print out and do whatever they want with the materials.

5.2

WATCHING ENGLISH DRAMAS ON TV

Students can be asked to watch dramas that had been televised through the websites. For example, through tv3 website like www.tontonTV3.com.my viewers can watch dramas which they have missed. As good English dramas are usually televised at night, what English teachers can do is to bring this drama to school during lesson time via the appropriate website.

5.3 LISTENING AND WATCHING RECORDED NEWS Teachers can record a series of English news broadcasts , for example Nightline on tv and show them to the students. Students will watch how the news is presented . As an added task, students may even be asked to present a news item following the style of the tv presenters.

5.5 CONCLUSION There are limitations to the suggestions above. First, its all about funds. It is not that easy to get funds to carry out a planned idea or programme. Good programmes or software from the British Council for example, have to be bought. Next, there is the time factor to be taken into consideration. As it is now we dont have all day long to learn English or to enjoy doing things in English. Maybe in future, English language curriculum setters might want to take the time factor into consideration and allot more time to accommodate the software/ programmes for listening to and watching programmes in the English Language .Finally It is hoped that this research will serve as important material for future research in the enhancement of English proficiency among Malaysian school children.
