Comp 102-104 331 August, 2011 Single Paragraph Essay Saving Food Lars Eighners On Dumpster Diving reminds readers of how precious a commodity food really is. He describes how so much food is thrown out but can still be salvaged and eaten with very little risk to the consumer. This illustrates how wasteful Americans really are. Canned foods are usually good and can be found quite frequently in dumpsters, provided there is no rust or dents on the can. Canned goods are among safest foods to be found in Dumpsters but are not utterly foolproof (359). Vegetables and fruits with the skins intact can also be eater so long as they are not obviously rotter. He states, Many are discarded due to minor imperfections that can be pared away (360). Cheeses with little mold are thrown out by college students, but can be pared as well. People who are fully aware of these facts still toss out these perfectly edible food items.
