Case Study - Student Interest Inventory

Name: Willie Holt Date:9/15/11

1. What is your job? What is your weekly schedule like? Did you choose to get a job or did your family urge you to? At what age did you start working? Do any of your friends have a job? He works at McDonalds. He doesnt always have a set schedule but he usually works 35 hours a week. Usually, his shifts are 6.5 hours, but he says that he never gets off on time so he normally ends up working about 8 hours. He works on schooldays after school and on the weekends, normally from 6am -2pm. Willie started working when he was 14. He started at the Mcdonalds by the airport because his brother was a manager. When he was 17, he transferred to the one at Colfax and Kingston, which is a lot closer to where he lives. He chose to get a job. He has 5 siblings so if he wanted money to be able to buy anything, he would have to get a job. He just bought a car recently. Most of his friends have jobs.

2. Do you think that having a job affects your school work? Do you feel like you get more stressed out than before you had a job? Do you sometimes have trouble finishing schoolwork because you have to work? Have you ever missed school because of work? He usually gets off of work at midnight, so getting schoolwork done is often hard. He says that he usually tries to start homework, but then just ends up falling asleep out of exhaustion.

3. What is your favorite activity or subject in school? Why? Your least favorite? Why? His favorite is English and his least favorite is Math. He says that he is not a math person.

4. What clubs, groups, teams, or organizations do you belong to? Include both school activities and those not sponsored by the school. He is a shooting guard on the Central basketball team.

5. What careers are you currently interested in? Pediatrician or something in the medical field.

6. Think of a great teacher youve had. Describe what made this teacher so terrific. His favorite teacher currently is Mr. Sailor. He likes how he works with his students. He has always had a job in high school, and most teachers will just automatically fail him and not take into consideration the fact that he has a job, whereas Sailor works with him and is flexible so that he can pass.
