    Ajnana, or ignorance, is beginningless and indescribable as either real or unreal. It is composed of the three tendencies (gunas) of sattva, rajas, and tamas. Ignorance is experienced and present but can be removed by knowledge (jnana). It has two powers - the veiling power that causes rebirth through veiling the true nature of the soul, and the projecting power that projects the world of multiplicity starting with space. There are two types of ignorance - samashti (cosmic) which affects the causal, subtle, and gross cosmic planes, and vyashti (individual) which affects the causal, subtle, and gross individual planes
