    On September 11, 2001, four commercial airliners were hijacked by al-Qaeda terrorists. Two planes crashed into the World Trade Center towers in New York City, a third plane hit the Pentagon just outside Washington, D.C., and the fourth plane crashed into a field in Pennsylvania after passengers fought back against the hijackers. Nearly 3,000 people were killed during the 9/11 terrorist attacks, which triggered major U.S. initiatives to combat terrorism and defined the presidency of George W. Bush.

    8:46 a.m.
    9/11/01 8:50 a.m.
    • At 8:48 the first footage of the attack is
    broadcasted on CNN
    • Air traffic Control in New York notes that
    Flight 175 has made a complete U-turn
    and heading towards New York
    • Flight 77 makes it’s last radio transmission
    asking for permission to fly higher
    9/11/01 9:03 a.m.
    All Flights are Grounded
    • At 9:26 there is a call to ground all military,
    civilian, and commercial flights nationwide. This
    is the first time such an order has ever been
    given.
    • At this time the FAA hears suspicious radio
    transmissions from Flight 93 and suspects it
    might be hijacked.
    • Ten minutes later Flight 93 veers off course
    almost making a complete U-turn and heads
    southeast.
