LISTENING
-is more complex than merely hearing. It is a process that consists of four stages: sensing and attending, understanding and interpreting, remembering and responding.

PURPOSE OF LISTENING
There are four general purposes when we listen. 1. Informative Listening -when you listen primarily to gather information. 2. Appreciative Listening -when you listen to feel good or be entertained. 3. Emphatic Listening -when you listen to provide understanding and support to another 4. Critical Listening -when you listen not merely to gain information but to evaluate the information

TECHNIQUES OF EFFECTIVE LISTENING


If you have developed some lazy ineffective listening habits all through these years, do not worry because listening is a skill you can improve through training and practice.

There are actually only four areas you can focus and work on to develop your listening skills: Psychological Emotional Physiological Physical Setting

When we speak of psychological, we refer to the mind. To be effective listeners, w have to discipline our minds. The key ideas are as follows: 1. Create interest in the speakers topic. 2. Concentrate on the message. 3. Understand the general theme or main idea. 4. Make a mental outline. Emotional aspect refers to the feelings and attitude. It is very hard to listen when we have biases or we cannot put our emotion in check about the speaker of the message. The key ideas are as follows: 1. Be objective 2. Do not fake attention 3. Develop openness towards the speaker and the message 4. Be fair and give the speaker a chance

Physiological aspect refers to the body. We have to b physically functioning well to be effective listeners. The key ideas are as follows: 1. Hearing mechanisms are intact and normal 2. Have enough sleep and feel generally healthy. 3. Learn to jot down notes. 4. Be aware of time difference between speaking rate and listeners thinking speed.
