TUBERCULOSIS

Tuberculosis- considered as the worlds deadliest disease and remains as the major public health problem in the Philippines. *sixth leading cause of morbity and mortality 2002 Causative agent- tubercle bacilli Signs and symptoms : cough for 2 weeks or more, fever, chest pain, hemoptysis or recurrent blood streaked sputum, significant weight loss and others such as sweating, fatigue, body malaise and shortness of breath.

Infectious agents : Mycobacterium tuberculosis and M.africanum humans and M. bovis from cattle. Mode of transmission: airborne droplet method direct invasion Bovine tuberculosis- ingesting of unpasteurized milk or dairy products. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis-other than laryngeal, not communicable, even if there is a draining sinus. Period of Communicability- as long as viable tubercle bacilli are being discharged in the sputum Susceptibility and Resistance- The most hazardous period for development

Methods of Control : Preventive Measures


Prompt diagnosis and treatment of infectious cases. BCG vaccination of newborn, infants and grade I/school entrants Educate the public in mode of spread and methods of control and the importance of early diagnosis. Improve social conditions, which increase the risk of becoming infected. Make available medical lab, xray and facilities, contacts and suspects and facilities for early treatment of
