Title Pānui i te reo o tōna āo mōhio
Version 2 Number of Credits 6

Format of the assessment

Candidates read a passage in Māori and answer a series of reading comprehension questions. There
are 20-30 questions, arranged within three tasks that collect evidence for each of the achievement
levels. Evidence from higher-level questions can provide replacement evidence for lower
achievement levels.

Question types will include:

 finding words or phrases of similar or opposite meaning in the passage
 short answer questions in Māori
 short answer questions in English
 translation of given phrases or sentences from the passage into English.

Candidates will be instructed as to the language (Māori, English, or a choice) required for the answer
to each question. Candidates must follow these instructions or they will be disadvantaged. As this is
a reading examination, only short answers of up to one sentence are required.

Content/Context details
The reading comprehension passage will be up to approximately 750 words in length. It will contain
vocabulary and language structures from Level 2 of ‘Te Reo Māori i roto i Te Maruatanga o
Aotearoa’, Te Pou Taki Kōrero, Te Tāhūhū o te Mātauranga, 1996. The level of difficulty will be
similar to typical passages from Toi Te Kupu, Te Wharekura or Te Tautoko.

The topics drawn on in the passage for 2007 may include:

 Issues of interest to young Māori people
 Health and fitness
 Humorous/entertaining stories.

will be provided.

The candidates’ writing across all tasks is assessed against the prepared Language Standard
Descriptors (Ngā Taumata o Te Reo) interpreted according to Level 2 of ‘Te Reo Māori i roto i Te
