Tsunami, Fukushima & Climate Change: what is the scientist's role?

Prof. Moto Ikeda (JAMSTEC, Japan)

The seminar will review and consider the recent catastrophic events in Japan (the Tsunami catastrophe and the subsequent Fukushima nuclear disaster) as an example of the role of scientists in dealing with natural disasters. In particular the role of science in producing information that is of value at the right time and space scales, and which can be effectively used by civil society to minimise impact, will be examined. The lessons learned from this experience will be considered in terms of the role of science in dealing with global warming and climate change and examine the roles of both the ocean and ocean science specialists.

Monday 10th October 2011 3.00-4.30pm

The University of Fort Hare East London Campus, Govan Mbeki Centre Boardroom, Hill Street.
