Safe Routes to School Noninfrastructure Grants


Deadline to apply: November 15, 2011 Who can apply? Any school district or school (K-8) in
Pennsylvania. The municipality or municipalities in which the schools walking routes are located MUST be a partner in the project.
Safe Routes to School (SRTS) is a national and international movement to create safe, sustainable, and healthy opportunities for children to bicycle and walk to school. Since 2005, the federal government has provided funding for all 50 states and the District of Columbia to implement a Safe Routes to School program. In Pennsylvania, the Department of Transportation is responsible for encouraging, promoting, and supporting SRTS activities across the commonwealth.

What is eligible? Walking and biking-related items and activities


targeting students in kindergarten through eighth grade. Eligible activities and items must not involve construction of physical facilities but instead support and enhance Safe Routes to School projects. The funded activities must address one or more of the first four Es of Safe Routes to School: education, encouragement, evaluation, and/or enforcement.

When are applications due? By 4:30 p.m., Tuesday,


November 15, 2011, to the Pennsylvania Safe Routes to School Resource Center. PLEASE NOTE: To be eligible for a noninfrastructure grant, an applicant must conduct evaluations of parents and students in the fall of 2011 and submit the data to the National Center for Safe Routes to School. www.saferoutesinfo.org/resources/evaluation_formdescriptions.cfm.
