Mission Statement for KCOA

Korean Cultural Outreach at Andover is a non-profit organization and part of the Community Service Program at Phillips Academy. Our mission is to educate adoptive families in their adopted childs natural culture, and to create an awareness and appreciation of Korean Culture within our community at large through general instruction in language, arts, and participation in cultural events. We encourage family participation.

religious practices centered around the significance of the moon Full moon once a month; considered a special/meaningful event

Food

(Songpyeon) A type of Korean rice cake, filled with sesame seeds/oil Food prepared with the years fresh harvest set out to give thanks to ancestors

Customs #1: (Charye)


Memorial service Held twice a year: Seollal (Lunar New Years Day) and Chuseok After service, family members sit together at the table to enjoy food that symbolizes their blessings.

Custom #2: (Beolcho) and (Seongmyo)


Beolcho Clearing weeds around the grave Seongmyo Visiting ancestral graves Duty and expression of devotion & respect for ones family

Custom #3: (Chuseokbim)


Head of each household buys new clothes for everyone in the house, including servants Modern day: purchase clothes from department stores/boutiques instead of exchanging Hanbok (traditional Korean clothing)
