Bamberger Article v1
Bamberger Article v1
By Jeremy Bamberger
Government is Dead Our social system is in a state of crisis. The demands made by society on government social security are met with increasing disappointment and alienation due to governments inability to produce results. Its power has been subjugated by corporate and individual wealth. As our cities struggle to provide basic public goods and services, Google, Apple, Facebook, and Twitter erect autonomous enclaves that provide employees healthcare, open space, recreation, and lifestyle. Similarly, cities are more and more shaped by corporate and private sponsorship and philanthropy. Public spaces (Millenium Park, San Franciscos POPOS) and lifestyle centers (Santana Row, Americana at Brand, Yerba Buena and the Metreon, Potsdamer Platz, Nikes subculture) are all products of private investment, many spawned by corporate profits and leveraging consumerism through social gathering. This thesis, then, will speculate on branded corporate spaces in our cities and what it means for urban form, social security, living, working, and consuming. The corporate headquarters is conflating working, living, social gathering, and consumerism. It is becoming a destination location in its own right. This thesis will explore the effect corporate lifestyle centers on urban spatial organization.
