EDITION 24, ISSUE 5 CALENDAR OF EVENTS Mon. Oct. 10 Tues. Oct.11

October 7, 2011

KUDOS - To everyone for their efforts with last evenings Back to School Night for parents. Annually, this is the first opportunity for many of our parents to meet us and to hear some of the expectations that we have for students in our classes. As with past years, evaluations, most likely, will indicate that parents were impressed and pleased by the presentations they heard. The completed evaluations will be tabulated and aggregated and shared in next weeks Nuts & Bolts. Thanks to everyone for the time and effort necessary to prepare for this annual event. - To Tracey Maynard who continues to work to develop our Emergency Phone Tree. Everyone received draft #2 earlier this week. You have one last opportunity to make any changes or moves on the tree. Please contact Tracey if you have a change that is needed, as we hope to put out a final copy of the Emergency Phone Tree early next week. -To everyone who is currently using Infinite Campus for their Grade Book, which is over half of our staff! We are well on our way to being fully ready to implement the Parent and Student Portals completely. It is just a matter of time until everyone is required to use Infinite Campus Grade Book and we are on the way to being there. Thanks to everyone who has begun working with Infinite Campus. Others can still make the switch. Your colleagues will be ready to assist you as will district technology experts. Please consider doing so and move our building a little bit further toward being ready for full implementation. Wed., Oct. 12 Thurs., Oct. 13 Fri., Oct. 14

HYPNOTIST NIGHT NEEDS YOU! The Student Council is again this year sponsoring Dr. Bengali, noted hypnotist, for an evening program next Friday, October 14, beginning at 7:00pm. Please consider attending and enjoying the evening first and foremost, but also serving as a de facto supervisor for our students. The activity night should be well attended and if last years evening event is any indication, full of fun, laughs and surprises. Mark your calendar and plan on attending. SUNSHINE FUND Each year we have several events that take place which call for recognition from the entire school community. Money for these cards of sympathy, flowers, etc, comes from our building Sunshine Fund. We periodically have to replenish the fund and your assistance in doing so is appreciated. Contributions of $10.00 can be given to Holly Lindhurst or Holly Blau for our building Sunshine Fund. INTERIM PROGRESS REPORT TIMELINE The 1st quarter interim progress report schedule is listed below: Tuesday, Oct. 11 Grading Window closed at 8:00 a.m. Tuesday, Oct. 11 Progress reports printed & placed in envelopes Wednesday, Oct. 12 Progress reports mailed OPEN POSITIONS LAST CHANCE As mentioned at Tuesday/Wednesdays faculty meeting, positions that carry a stipend are technically open every year. Staff members who were in a position last year have the right of first refusal for this year as well, unless performance was unsatisfactory and a change is necessary. The only positions technically open at this time are musical producer and costume coordinator. If interested in this position please let R. Moore know. BEDS DAY APPROACHING A reminder that all the Beds forms should be completed by today and left with the appropriate office personnel. S.I.N.I. Unfortunately, Shaker Junior High School will be designated as a school in need of improvement (SINI) in ELA. This means that as a school we have not met AYP with our ELA scores for two consecutive years. In order to make AYP, you must make AYP in every subgroup as well as for the total population. We did not make AYP due to our special education subgroup not making AYP for two consecutive years. This is an interesting phenomenon in that our seventh grade aggregate results placed us fifth in the Suburban Council and in eighth grade our scores placed us second in the Suburban Council. Regardless, we are working to evaluate revisions to our existing program which will necessitate receiving ideas, thoughts, perspectives, and considerations from all involved parties. Stay tuned!

THOUGHT FOR THE WEEK Just go out there and do what youve got to do. Martina Navratilova
