Boynton teams flex their muscles in Dizzy Dean quarterfinals

by Scott Herpst 07.20.09 - 10:31 pm RINGGOLD - Tuesday afternoon's winners' bracket semifinals of the 7-year-old Dizzy Dean Baseball World Series will have a very distinct local flavor. Both Boynton teams advanced with wins on Monday at the Jack Mattox Complex in Ringgold. The Boynton Buzz - last year's 6-under World Series champs - marched into the semis with a 20-11 win over the Powder Springs (Ga.) Indians while the Boynton Blaze got a measure of revenge with a 21-14 victory over the Midway Tigers. Midway defeated the Blaze, two games to one, for the state "B" championship at Chattanooga Valley two weeks ago. The Buzz will face the Hobgood (Ga.) Heat in one semifinal. The Heat got a twoout, RBI-double from Brennan Milone in their final at-bat to score Cole Bearden with the winning run in an 8-7 thriller over the Mean Green of East Brainerd (Tenn.) Meanwhile, the Blaze will try to stay hot as they take on the Northport (Ala.) Nationals, who edged the Middle Valley (Tenn.) Predators, 12-10, in their quarterfinal matchup. The winners' bracket semifinals are set for 4:30 p.m. on Tuesday. Losing teams in Monday's quarterfinals fell to the losers' bracket, where they will have to battle back starting Tuesday at noon. Powder Springs will face Acworth Orange. East Brainerd will take on the Hobgood Thunder. Midway will square off the with Lake Lanier Copperheads while Middle Valley will face the only other local team remaining, the Ringgold Tigers. The Tigers picked up two wins on Monday in the losers' bracket, eliminating the Kennesaw Generals and the Murray County Bandits to keep their championship hopes alive. Two Walker County teams were sent home on Monday. The Chickamauga Choo Choos, who fell to Midway on Sunday, were eliminated with a loss to the Hobgood Thunder on Monday while the Chattanooga Valley Eagles managed a win in the consolation bracket over North Cherokee (Ga.) before falling to the Limestone (Ala.) Predators late Monday afternoon. The tournament will continue through Thursday. walkermessenger.com 2009
