From the Organ Bench

Psalm 23
Today I grabbed my little handbag and went to the market. My cart contained yogurt, cheese, sausage in casings, lamb chops, lanolin based lotion and other items. Upon my return home I cleaned the carpet in the music room, dusted off my sons diploma and tuned the cello before my workout session on those gut strings. A chill in the air invited a cozy warm sweater. As I looked over the musical setting for this weeks psalm, I was struck by the quiet hidden influences of modern day shepherding in my daily life. The LORD is my shepherd. I have been purchased at the market by the Shepherding-One. The Shepherd sees value in me. What benefit do I bring to the flock of faith? Do my actions provide the warmth of the LORDS kindness to those who are shivering in the chill of hunger? Do I recognize the Shepherds face in the homeless? I shall not want. What is it that I want? When I think about it, I am ashamed of the things I want. I should want to be a better listener. I should want to be more trusting in The Shepherds way rather than my way. Besides restful waters He leads me. The Shepherd leads me to drink clean water; refreshing water, free of toxins. I do not have to spend my time filtering or purifying what is essential to my well being. The Shepherd is the drinking fountain that refreshes my soul. Even though there are over two hundred varieties of sheep, each variety offers a unique product. The Shepherds flock is infinitely unique. The LORD has a unique plan for each one of us in his flock.
