Guiling, Manangan secure gold in judo meet

With his killer Hakais and Uranage styles, gold medalist Paulo Manangan of the -90kg category led the juniors to a third overall finish in the recently concluded University Athletic Association of the Philippines (UAAP) 74th Judo Championship, held at Ninoy Aquino Stadium last October 1-2. Despite being outnumbered by other universities, the locals ignored intimidation and kept playing "All heart, All out," to flood the University with nine medals, two golds, two silvers and five bronzes. "This season 'di kami nag-promise na mag place pero we did our best kahit outnumbered kami. Still, we will try to work it out and maintain or higher pa," said head coach Jerome Angeo to the Red and White community. Also, Mark Verano (-73kg) and Mark Reyes (-60 kg) top-seeded the event as they grabbed silver and bronze, respectively. On the other hand, Lady Warrior Mary Grace Guiling of the -70kg category captured the limelight as she easily secured a gold medal in the women's division while Halbert Orcine of the -73kg category snared bronze in the men's tournament. In spite of typhoon Quiel's visit to the event, the brave seniors remained unstoppable as they ended their campaign at 4th and 5th place with five medals and a bronze, respectively.
