    What is a Smart Card?

    The Smart Card is one of the latest additions to the world of Information technology. A Smart Card is a piece of plastic, the same size as a credit or debit card, with a silicon chip embedded on it.

    The chip contains a microprocessor, which is a miniature computer, which can perform calculations and store data in its memory.
    You can think of the Smart Card as a Credit Card with a brain on it, the brain being a small embedded computer chip.

    Physical structure:
    The physical structure of a smart card is specified by the International Standards Organization (ISO) 7810, 7816/1 and 7816/2. Plastic card has dimensions 85.60mm X 63.98mm X 0.80mm. A printed circuit and an integrated circuit chip are embedded on the card.

    ARCHITECTURE:
    Smart card have three fundamental elements:

    Processing Power. Data Storage Elements. A means to input to output data.

    The connection is made when the reader contacts a small gold chip on the front of the card. It requires the insertion of the card into a smart card reader with a direct connection.

    Contact less Smart Card:


    These can communicate via an antenna, eliminating the need to insert or and remove the card by hand. It can be used in the application in which card insertion/removal may be impractical or in which the speed is important.

    Differs form conventional cards as:

    It allows thousand of times the information storable on magnetic strip cards. They are more reliable and perform multiple function. They are highly secure because of high security mechanism such as advanced encryption and biometrics.
