Most of the Word editing and formatting techniques require that you first select or highlight a block of text and then issue a command that affects that block of text. Selecting allows you to precisely control which part of your document is affected by a Word command. At any given time a document either has a selection or insertion point, never both. Selecting text removes the normal insertion point.
Underline
Selected text always appears highlighted. A selection may include letters, words, lines, paragraphs or even the entire document. Text can be selected using the keyboard or the mouse or a combination of both.
Strikethrough
The basic method for using the keyboard for selecting text is to hold down the Shift key and then to press any of the keys or key combinations you normally use for moving the insertion point.
Borders
The Word selection bar is the blank area to the left of the text. If you move the mouse pointer to the left of the text onto the selection bar, it will change to a white right-pointing arrow. You use the selection to assist in the selection of text.
