SYNTHESIS AND CHARACTERISATION OF POLYACETYLENEA MAJOR CONDUCTING POLYMER

By P.Anand, S.Vijay Kumar. 4th B.Tech- Polymer Technology, KAMARAJ COLLEGE OF ENGG & TECH, VIRUDHUNAGAR.
ABSTRACT Here we review the preparation and process characteristics of one the major inherently conducting polymer POLYACETYLENE (PAC). The invention of conducting polymers is an important bench mark in both electrical and chemical fields. PAC is a polymer with double bonds in the backbone. The advantage of using PAC is that it is less toxic and easy to process than other ICPs. It is prepared from its monomer called Ethyne. But the commercial preparation involves the Ziegler-Natta process and the Ring Opening Metathesis Polymerization (ROMP) of higher range molecules like Cyclooctatetraene. Oxidation process and doping the polymer with iodine can yield conductivity equivalent to silver. It can be extruded as films with ease. The major application involves the organic photovoltaic cells. The research on conductivity of PAC got the Noble Price for chemistry in 2000.
