STYLE

In story structure, style show how the language is used to create an effect. Below are list of types of style in short story, The Purple Dress:

i.

Metaphor

Metaphor is a comparison made between things which are essentially not alike. It is similar to a simile, but does not use like or as. In this story it is shown by the sentence peppermint-pepsin flavor to her speech use to describe the way when Grace talks.

ii.

Onomatopoeia

Onomatopoeia is one of style of story structure that is shown when you name an action by imitating the sound associated with it, this is known as onomatopoeia. In this story, it is shown when the writer was describing the crying Grace when she was kicked out from her room by the owner of the house. The write wrote sniffle, sniffle, sob, sniffle that show when Grace was crying in front of Maida.

Simile

Simile is a comparison that often uses the words like or as. The writer wrote The landladys clattering sourly in the halls like churn dasher dabbing in buttermilk to describe how strict and angry the owner of the house that Grace and Maida rent for a room each of them after Grace failed to pay her rooms rent. Then, the writer wrote eyes as red as any dress to describe the condition of Graces eyes when she cried after she was chased out from her room by the owner of the house that she live.

Hyperbole

Exaggerating, often in a humorous way, to make a particular point is known as hyperbole. Firstly, the writer wrote old Bachmans roar over his own deeply-concealed jokes to describe the way how Bachman laugh. The word roar normally use for tiger. When it is used to describe the way of laugh means that the laugh is not an ordinary laugh that we normally heard. Secondly, by the sentences Maida breathed a million part of the thanks in her heart the writer wants to describe how thankful Maida to Schlegel after she was allowed to take her purple dress without pay the full payment and this give her a chance to attend the dinner.
