PDPU officials ban students for campus violence

Ahmedabad Mirror Bureau amfeedback@indiatimes.com

In a corrective measure to curb violence on the campus, the discipli-Inary committee of PDPU banned some students involved in a brawl from entering the college premises. The students, who have been asked to vacate their hostel rooms, are also barred from writing their mid-semester exams, beginning Monday. On September 5, a fight broke out between two groups of students at the university hostels and Adalaj police had to be called in to control the situation.

TWO GROUPS INVOLVED

It all started when one of the groups was assaulting their batchmate outside the hostel. In the meantime, another group arrived and attempted to rescue the student. Soon, it turned into an inter-group fight and several students sustained injuries in the struggle which took some time to end. But at night, about five students, who do not stay at the hostels, barged into students rooms and started searching for those who had confronted them, said the student. The group caught some students and bashed them up again. One of the students, who was trapped on the third floor, managed to escape by jumping off the floor. I even heard that they were equipped with baseball bats and hockey sticks, he added. To bring the situation under control, the institute had to call the cops. After the incident, the classes were suspended and students were not allowed on the campus. They were told to stay in hostels and come out only to have their meal in the mess, the student said.

14 STUDENTS WERE ARRESTED

Police Sub-inspector B C Wahegla of Koba police chowkey said, We arrested 14 students as precautionary measures under IPC 151. But, they were released after district magistrate granted them bail. PDPU Additional Registrar Bharat Shah said, We have formed a threemember committee to probe the reason for the tiff. It will submit its report in 10 days. Based on that report, action will be taken against the students who will be found guilty. But we have already suspended some students and they will not be allowed to write exams. This is done to ensure no such incident occurs again.
