WHY PAKISTAN LAGS BEHIND?

THE NEED OF WIND POWER INDUSTRY

Presented by: Karima Rehmani

Introduction
First multi megawatt wind turbine plant was set up by Denmark in 1978 This led to the growth of Global Wind Power Industry Global wind energy output is 157,899 MW Major contributors are China, USA and Europe

India generates 14,200MW of wind energy. Pakistan currently holds the potential to generate 50,000MW of wind energy. Wind Corridors are present in Jhimpir, Gharo and Ketti Bandar.

Energy Policies by Pakistan

The Renewable Energy Policy was introduced in 2006. An investment friendly policy with returns of 17% in dollars Provided a Wind risk guarantee to pay the investors even if the project doesnt work due to lack of wind.

STILL THE INVESTORS ARE NOT ATTRACTED AND PROJECT(S) ARE NOT BEING SET UP
WHY?

Reason # 1
Lack of commitment shown by the government No wind data has been collected since 2003. No accurate findings of whatever data is available

Investors do not know exactly the amount of wind that is available to make a feasibility report.

Reason # 2
No Pilot project has been set up by the government. Pilot projects help in marketing the technology and build investors confidence

Reason # 3
The above mentioned reasons leads to a delay in project establishment by 12-16 months This delay is there because the investors themselves have to collect the data and perform risk-benefit assessment.

PILOT PROJECTS
Each 50MW project would cost $135-145 million The government needs to invest only $34-36 million since rest can be taken as debt from only 5 banks.

THE WAY FORWARD

The government should set up pilot projects Strict implementation on Alternative and Renewable Energy Policy 2011 Show more intent to attract investors

Look into other forms of energy sources like solar and biomass energy
