COUNTRY: PEOPLES REPUBLIC OF CHINA. COMMITTEE: UNITED NATIONS SECURITY COUNCIL TOPIC: SHOULD INDIA BECOME A PART OF P5.

For centuries China stood as a leading civilization, outpacing the rest of th e world in the arts and science. China since the early 1990s has increased its global outreach and participation in international organizations and worked for the well fare of humanity. India-China relationship through a historical lens, points out that the relations between these two neighbors have always been tenuous, riddled with contentious border issues and territorial claims. However, these reasons solely do not lead to Chinas strict refusal regarding Indias permanent seat on UNSC i.e. China has a unanimous stance along with other countries that India should not be given the permanent member status of the United Nations Security Council. The main reason for this is that it would disturb balance of power in the region. Many of the world's grievances are exacerbated by the fact that membership of the permanent section is too narrow and there is too much disparity in power between the P5 and the other members. The UN is in need of structural reform, so the expansion of the P5 is not wrong in principle, but India should be first eligible for it. India's pending membership of the UNSC as a permanent member would indeed boost the nation's credentials globally and confirm India's status as an economic and military powerhouse; but India is occupying Kashmir and is in breach of numerous UN resolutions. India also has illegal nuclear weapons and arsenal the US has agreed to ignore (and offer assistance in civilian nuclear development). India has also been accused of involvement in terror. Under such circumstances India should not be given a permanent seat in UNSC. But if India is able to counter the growing terror on its own soil, plus pledges not to break the UN resolutions in the coming years and agrees to stop its nuclear development program with United States and therefore sign the Non Proliferation Treaty as per the requirement, then China may consider to Indias permanent seat in UNSC.
