TOPIC FOR REDNOCK CHINA

DISCUSSION 2011

China has the worlds largest population, some of the worlds largest cities and is the worlds largest land mass. It has huge supplies of many of the worlds resources. China is an awakening giant. It has already replaced the UK as the fourth largest economy in the world, Germany has recently been overtaken too. China is the worlds fastest growing economy with large volumes of trade and finance moving in and out of it. What happens in China over the next ten or twenty years will have far reaching and long lasting effects on all of us. On the 19th October 2011 25 students from Rednock will be visiting China on a 9 day tour - an experience of a lifetime. 1. What do you already know about China? What questions would you ask? What would you want to find out?
2. 3.

Where would you travel to what might be an experience of a lifetime? Why? What are the issues that surround China what do we really know about this Awakening Giant? -population growth and the one child policy, consumption and production of energy, internal ethnic disputes, Tibet, economic growth at what costs, sweatshops, communism, Taiwan, Hong Kong, human rights?

4.

China may have a rich economy but its people still only have average earnings of approximately $600 per year. Could the planet sustain China if its people had earnings and a life style on a par with ours?
