    The Aztecs arrived in Mexico in the 13th century as nomadic tribes but were not initially welcomed. One king offered them undesirable land filled with snakes hoping they would leave, but the Aztecs conquered the snakes and built their kingdom there instead. This became the site of their capital city Tenochtitlan, which was built in a strategic island location in a lake. The Aztecs had an organized political structure and practiced human sacrifice as part of their religion. Their empire was eventually conquered by the Spanish conquistador Hernan Cortes in the 16th century.
